I often get messages that seem either automated or copy and pasted when I follow a Twitter account. Do you think we should all do this?

Should I follow lots of people who tweet words realted to my interests, or who are in my local area?

There are so many social networks, which ones would allow me to be most effective in communicating to my customers, as I don't have enough time to join all the ones I know of.
